Carnoustie

GMS started to work with the Carnoustie Golf Links Management Committee in 2002 and since then has been heavily involved in helping the Scottish Open Championship venue regain its place as one of the busiest and most desirable golf venues in the British Isles.

Strategy

  • Introduce a 3-year plan to increase green fee income which had stagnated over the previous decade
  • Plan and implement a new advertising campaign to enhance the profile of Carnoustie in all the key golf markets in Europe
  • Mount an intensive PR campaign aimed at ridding the course of the image it obtained in the aftermath of the 1999 Open
  • Publicize Carnoustie’s innovative on-line booking system and new-style green fee promotions
  • Invite key travel journalists to play the course
  • Commission leading golf photographer to produce a library of attractive images of Carnoustie’s three courses
  • Agree and implement a PR strategy aimed a maximizing the positive publicity gained from hosting the 2007 Open Championship

Results

  • In 2006 Green Fee income reached a record high and has continued to increase since
  • Massive increase in PR coverage over the last 4 years
  • On-line booking and sophisticated green fee packages successfully introduced
  • The 2007 Open Championship was an overwhelming success
