Golf Pride has launched a brand new range of golf grips that offer PGA professionals a great chance to expand their re-gripping business.
The new range – headed by the revolutionary Decade MultiCompound and Dual Durometer grips - offer breakthrough technology and have already proved popular with consumers in all of the company’s major markets around the world.
“I can safely say that we have been absolutely delighted with the initial reaction to the new Decade MultiCompound and Dual Durometer grips and feel interest in the products will increase as and when their benefits are understood by the public at large,” said Paul Steels, marketing manager of Golf Pride UK.
“I don’t have to tell PGA professionals how difficult it is to persuade the average golfer how important it is to change the grips on his clubs on a regular basis but with the arrival of the Decade MultiCompound and the Dual Durometer I think he has a much better chance of getting the message through.”
Recent research undertaken by Sports Marketing Surveys Ltd showed that only 18% of British golfers changed the grips on the woods and irons every 1-2 years but that could well change now that Golf Pride has introduced a range of grips that have demonstrative benefits for golfers’ games.
The new Decade MultiCompound grip has been described as the breakthrough grip of the year and that is no idle boast. It is manufactured using unique a combination of black Velvet cord and soft red rubber to give users key benefits that are not available in any other grip.
The black Velvet cord is situated in the upper hand area and is designed to enhance control even in inclement weather. The soft red rubber can be found in the lower hand area and helps to provide ultimate feel and responsiveness.
The new Dual Durometer will also enhance Golf Pride’s reputation for innovation and gives the professional another great sales message to pass on to his customers.
Golf Pride’s second major launch of 2004 is unique in that it is manufactured using two layers of thermoset rubber one of top of the other. The firmer inner layer is designed to optimise control and feedback while the softer high-traction outer layer maximises comfort and feel.
“I’d like to think that Golf Pride’s new grips give the professional a great opportunity but I’m also realistic enough to know they won’t sell themselves,” said Steels.
“Each professional has to be prepared to sell the re-gripping message to his customers because its benefits are still not widely understood.”
Golf Pride’s research shows that the average amateur changes his grips every six years and although it is clear some do not even bother at all. It also shows that as many as 35% of golfers use grips that are either too large or small for them which is bound to lead to detrimental results.
“A professional does not have to be told how vital it is to change his grips but it’s a different story when it comes to a lot of amateurs,” said Steels.
“We spend thousands of pounds each year advertising the benefits of re-gripping but at the end of the day the professional probably has a better chance to get the massage across when he is face to face with the a potential customer.”
Steels believes that an intensive sales campaign is required if the retailer wants to see an appreciable uplift in grip sales but he points out that the workload can be shared.
“I know a lot of professionals who would love to earn more from re-gripping but don’t have the time or the inclination to service the customer. It’s a common problem but one that has an obvious solution.”
Steels has found that the best results are often achieved when the head professional allocates the task to his assistants. That means the head professional increases his earnings without expanding his work load and at the same time gives the assistant a means of increasing his income.
“I would recommend that all professionals give their assistants a financial incentive to build their re-gripping business and can confirm I have seen such a system work on numerous occasions.
“The idea is to offer the assistant 25 or 50 pence to change each grip. It is amazing how that motivates him into drumming up business and can have a major impact on your business without increasing the time you spend working in the back shop.”
10 Top Tips to Sell More Grips
1. Many amateurs have no idea how important it is to change their grips on a regular basis and so have to be told about the benefits.
2. Put up posters on the notice board to remind members and visitors that you offer a comprehensive re-gripping service at competitive prices
3. Be prepared to try out a number of different deals to see which ones work best at your club. You might offer regular fourballs a 3 for 4 deal if they get their grips done together. Alternatively, you might try throwing in a free putter grip when a member has the rest of his grips changed.
4. Statistics show that women tend to be particularly reticent about changing grips so when a husband gets his grips changed why not suggest you could do his wife’s at a specially reduced price.
5. Organise special re-gripping weekends a couple of times a year. These are particularly effective in early Spring when golfers are preparing themselves for the new season.
6. When you are giving lessons you should remind pupils how important it is to have good, well-fitted grips. Golf Pride research shows that as many as 35% of British golfers use grips that are either too big or too small for them. In almost all instances this will have a detrimental effect on their progress and could even result in them going elsewhere for tuition
7. Golf Pride recommends that professional who are serious about selling more grip should have the selection of the grips they offer on display at all times. Cut down some old shafts, fit them with the grips you stock and leave them in full view of everyone who comes into the shop. That gives potential customers the chance to see what the grips feel like when they are on a club. Just as importantly, it reminds the individual that his or her grips don’t feel nearly so good.
8. When a customer appears undecided about changing grips, remind him that grips in poor condition could cost him as much as 2-3 shots a round.
9. Offer a free grip evaluation service. When applicable, recommend that a customer gets some, but not all, of his grips changed. This will not cost you business in the long run because, invariably, once the customer sees how much the new grips have helped him, he will want them all done.
10. Be prepared to share the income with your assistant(s). When they know they will benefit, they are much more likely to drum up business on your behalf.

Re-gripping could never be described as glamorous but it can be a lucrative sideline – provided, that is, the professional goes to the trouble of promoting the service to his customers.
Recent research, conducted by Golf Pride, the world’s No. 1 grip manufacturer, shows that just a small percentage of amateur golfers understand how important it is to change their grips on a regular basis. The rest are oblivious to the benefits and will not even consider getting their clubs re-gripped unless actively encouraged to do so.
“In an ideal world, all golfers would understand how important it is to change their grips regular but, unfortunately, it does not happen like that,” said Paul Steels, Golf Pride’s UK marketing manager.
“Instead, our research shows that the average amateur only changes his grips every six years and some don’t bother to change them at all.
“It’s all down to ignorance.” Steels added, “and that ignorance is bad for business, both for Golf Pride and for the pros.
Each year, Steels spends a considerable sum of money advertising the benefits of re-gripping in consumer magazines but he is also realistic enough to know that without the backing of professionals it will only have marginal effect.
It really is quite simple,” he said. “I genuinely believe there is a lot of money to be made out of re-gripping but it won’t just materialise. The retailer has to actively go out to earn it. Put another way, he has to sell the service to his customers if he wants to reap the benefits. The more imaginative he is, the better he will do.”
Steels believes that if professionals are serious about expanding this side of their business, the first thing they should do is to advertise what they offer. “Put up notices in your shop and in the clubhouse reminding golfers that you offer a full re-gripping service,” he suggested. “When giving lessons, remind your pupils how important it is to have good, well-fitted grips. Golf Pride estimates that as many as 35 of golfers use grips that are either to large, or too small for them. So check, selling them grips that fit them could have immediate benefits to their games.”
All golfers love a bargain so, when promoting the service offered Steels recommends the retailer tries a series of different sales technique. For example, as part of the service, the professional could offer to check customers’ grips free of charge. When applicable, he could suggest that only the most worn grips should be replaced. This will not cut into sales as the customer will soon discover how much better the new grips feel and want the rest of them done.
At set times of the year, it is also a good idea to organise special Re-Gripping weekends during which special discounts apply. Similarly, the retailer could offer re-gripping vouchers to be used as Christmas and birthday presents. Some pros have seen an upturn in business when they have offered a special rate for regular four balls who get their clubs re-gripped at the same time. Others offer a deal where, if a man gets his clubs re-gripped, his wife gets hers done for a reduced rate. “That is often a good way to do it because women, even more than men, tend to be ignorant about the benefits of re-gripping. Through experience, I have found that different deals work better at different clubs. You might have to experiment a bit to find the one that works best but, it is worth it because, if you do, you will sell more grips.”
Steels also suggests that if a professional is serious about expanding his re-gripping business, he should display the selection of grips he offers. “Don’t just throw them into the back shop,” he said. “Instead, cut down some old shafts, fit them with the grips you stock and then display them for all to see. That gives potential customers the chance to see what each grip feels like on a club. Just as importantly, it also acts as a reminder that their grips don’t feel quite as good.”
This hands-on approach to selling grips has been proved to work at clubs all over the country but, if a professional does not feel he has the time, to try it, he could pass it on to his assistant to try.
“If the assistant gets, say, 25p or 50p for every grip he changes that acts as a great incentive to drum up business,” said Steels.
“Who knows, if he puts his mind to it, business could soon be booming, without the professional ever having to change a grip again.”

Setting New Standards
Golf Pride, the world’s No 1 grip manufacturer, chose 2004 to launch two of the most innovative grips the game of golf has ever seen. Both the Decade MultiCompound and the Dual Durometer have proved extremely popular, and are already being used by growing numbers of golfers all over the world
The Decade MultiCompound
Golf Pride has confirmed its reputation as the world’s most innovative grip manufacturer by launching a brand new Decade MultiCompound grip, offering the golfer a hitherto unavailable combination of superlative performance and outstanding feel.
The new Decade MultiCompound grip, the breakthrough grip of the year, is manufactured using a combination of Golf Pride’s exclusive black Velvet cord in the upper hand area and soft red rubber in the lower hand area. The former is designed to enhance control, even in inclement weather, while the latter provides ultimate feel and responsiveness.
The Dual Durometer
The Dual Durometer, Golf Pride’s second new grip for 2004, is also unique in that it is manufactured using two layers of thermoset rubber.
The firm inner layer is designed to optimise control and feedback while the softer, high-traction outer layer maximises comfort and feel.
The new Dual Durometer grip is manufactured using black rubber and is finished with red end cap and Golf Pride logo. A slightly larger Midsize model is also available, finished in distinctive yellow.
Golf Pride, the world’s No.1 grip manufacturer, has introduced a new V-55 grip in time for the 2004 season.
The V-55 combines the best characteristics of Golf Pride’s popular 50th Anniversary and V-50 models. It is a one-piece grip, featuring a conventional, domed end-cap. A distinctive yellow colour highlights the traditional Victory arrow on the front of the grip and the Golf Pride logo on the back of the grip.
It is available in a durable, high-traction, rubber compound or in Golf Pride’s exclusive Velvet Cord compound.

Eaton Corporation, manufacturer of Golf Pride grips, the No. 1 grip in golf, has introduced a new lightweight grip that weighs 20% less than standard.
The new Dual Durometer™ Light grip, which is manufactured using the same innovative material and construction as the original Dual Durometer grip introduced in 2004, weighs just 38.5 grams, decreases club static weight by 10 to 12 grams and increases swing weight by 2 to 3 points.
Dual Durometer grips have also been given an Ease of Use commendation from the Arthritis Foundation for their ability to minimise the painful effects on joints while swinging a golf club.
“The new Dual Durometer Light grip is designed for golfers who use modern lightweight shafts,” said Paul Steels, the UK and European Director of Operations for Eaton Ltd, makers of Golf Pride grips.
“If you fit a standard 50 gram grip to a lightweight shaft, you will decrease the swing weight considerably but that problem is alleviated if you select a Dual Durometer™ Light grip instead.
“It should also give the golfer a bit more feel in the head,” he added.
The Dual Durometer and Dual Durometer Light grips both feature a firm inner layer, designed to minimize torque and maximize responsiveness, and a soft tacky outer skin for comfort and control. Both have a unique, high traction surface pattern, designed for non-slip performance, even in inclement weather.
There are three versions available, all of which are instantly recognisable. The standard-sized Dual Durometer grip has a red cap and a red Golf Pride logo, the mid-size Dual Durometer grip has a yellow cap and a yellow logo, while the new Dual Durometer Light is finished in blue.
The new Dual Durometer Light grip is one of a number of new Golf Pride grips introduced for 2005. Also new are the Tour Velvet® Half Cord and two new putter grips, the Dual Durometer™ Putter and the New Decade™ Putter.

The world’s most innovative grip manufacturer has listened to the market and has added two new Dual Durometer™ grips and an addition to the New Decade™ MultiCompound range.
The company’s highly successful Dual Durometer range has been extended to include an Undersize and a Cord model. The two new Dual Durometer grips are both manufactured using the same two-layer thermoset rubber found in the original Dual Durometer grip. Their firm inner layer optimises control and feedback while the soft, high traction outer layer maximises feel and playability.
All grips in the Dual Durometer range have received an Ease of Use commendation from the Arthritis Foundation (US) for their ability to minimise the painful effects on joints caused by swinging a golf club.
The latest New Decade MultiCompound Midsize grip has also been launched in response to consumer demand and like its standard-sized predecessor fuses the positive performance of rubber and cord for an exciting new look and feel. The MultiCompound Midsize grip features Golf Pride’s exclusive Black Velvet cord in the upper hand area which enhances control in all sorts of weather conditions. The soft, red rubber found in the lower hand area provides exceptional responsiveness and feel.

LAURINBURG, N.C. … Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation introduced its latest line of Golf Pride brand grips for the 2007 season. The new models continue to build on Golf Pride’s innovative technology and commitment to improving golfers’ performance. Among the new Golf Pride grips to hit the course this year are the DD2™ grip and the New Decade™ MultiCompound Putter grip.
“The Golf Pride 2007 grip series continues to build on our groundbreaking technology,” said Jeff Fiorini, general manager of Eaton’s Golf Grip Division. “With every innovation, we look to develop grips that will give golfers an edge out on the course – whether they’re a beginner or a touring professional.”
The new DD2 grip combines a soft rubber compound with a firm, low-torque rubber material to provide golfers with enhanced stability, ultimate comfort and reduced torque for consistent shot feedback.
DD2 employs similar material and construction technology as Golf Pride’s popular Dual Durometer™ grip, but is evolutionary in material placement and styling.
The black rubber material in the DD2 provides a stable, firm base layer that runs the length of the grip. It is visible at both ends, as well as down the front of the grip, creating an upper-hand thumb placement area for alignment. The softer gold rubber material is molded on top of the black base layer to provide maximum control and comfort in all weather conditions. The combination of DD2 grip materials and molding technology provides torsional strength and enhanced stability, which eliminates twisting or moving during the swing. The DD2 is available in standard and midsize.
The distinctive look and tour-proven performance of the New Decade MultiCompound putter has made it the hottest grip in golf. Now the MultiCompound is available in a small diameter, tour-proven putter grip that encourages comfortable hand placement and consistent putter alignment. The MultiCompound putter grip provides the moisture management of cord in the upper hand, with the comfort of rubber in the lower hand for sure traction in all weather conditions and the soft touch needed on the greens. The new MultiCompound putter grip comes in red, yellow, blue, orange and pink, giving players the option to have a matched set of grips across their entire set.
“Choosing the right grip for your game is critical to maximizing performance on the course, said Fiorini. “Golfers must consider grip size, overall feel and weather conditions which can drastically affect shot-making ability. With all of the advancements in new club technology, nothing is more critical than the only part of the club golfers actually touch – the grip.”

Eaton Corporation, manufacturers of Golf Pride® grips, the world’s No. 1 grip brand would like to warn all golfers to be extremely wary of counterfeit grips being sold on the internet.
In recent months there has been a large increase in the volume of imitation golf grips being sold on auction sites such as EBAY. Whilst these grips may be appealing due to their low price, Golf Pride would like to make people aware that these grips are made of poor quality rubber that is not very durable and could cause your hands to slip in wet weather, not to mention the fact that they are illegal.
“The advent of selling over the internet has helped make it much easier for counterfeiters to pass off their products to the public as the real deal,” commented Paul Steels, General Manager of Golf Pride Europe.
“Whilst it is extremely difficult to stop this practice, we would strongly recommend that golfers always endeavour to use the best quality grips available for the benefit of their game.”

LAURINBURG, N.C., …Golf Pride® has introduced a radical new concept in golf grip design and technology with the V-RADTM family of putter grips. Slated to make its global debut this month, the V-RAD putter is the most exciting putter grip on the market today, crafted with intricate detail and cutting-edge cosmetic innovation.
The V-RAD putter grip will come in three distinctive and vibrant aesthetic designs called Optik™, Shock™ and Silk™. They are crafted with a proprietary advanced composite rubber (ACR) material to enhance feel and durability, while maintaining the performance and quality standards expected of Golf Pride grips. It features one-piece construction that makes it as easy to install as conventional golf grips.
“V-RAD is the answer to golfers who value style and refuse to compromise performance and durability,” said Jeff Fiorini, general manager for Eaton’s Golf Grip Division. “It’s easy to clean and we feel it will revolutionize the putter grip category.”
